Success Rates

Electrotelluric technology has the unique ability to provide detailed subsurface information about a reservoir’s presence, thickness, depth, and fluid type. Having this unparalleled degree of resolution prior to drilling greatly reduces dry hole risk, thereby increasing your overall success rate. 3-D seismic has a wildcat success rate of 43% while the PetroSonde’s wildcat success rate is closer to 50% at less than 10% of the cost of 3-D seismic.

On development wells the PetroSonde bats close to 80% success. Meaning the depth, thickness of pay, and fluid content are accurate. The ability to determine updip from downdip is the difference, many times, between a gusher and a dry hole. Shown here is our accuracy rates in different applications.

Expected Results by Scenario

Listed Below are the typical usage scenarios for the Petro Sonde and expected accuracy rates. Best case scenarios are working near known control points and branching out, while least accurate are wildcat prospects. In general the Petro Sonde excels at lithological identification, which is what it is named after (Petro – greek for ‘rock’, and Sonde which means remote observation). Shales, limestones, and sands are the typical suspects, but granite, coal, salt, dolomite, karst voids, sinkholes, and more can also be detected. Fluid identification is also very common, and as with lithology best results are obtained working next to known control points. Water (fresh and salt) and hydrocarbon are the main prospects, while contaminants such as jet fuel on the water table may also be detected.

ABSENCE OF HYDROCARBONS: The next best thing to knowing where oil and water are present is knowing where they are NOT. 97%
LITHOLOGY (NORMAL): Following known marker formations, determining extents of sand formation. 90%
FLUID (WATER): Determining presence of fresh water within a known porous formation, reservoir mapping. 85%
LITHOLOGY (COMPLEX): Includes salt domes, reefs areas of extreme dip or faults. 80%
FLUID (OIL/GAS): Determining presence of hydrocarbon oil or gas within a known porous formation, reservoir mapping. 75%
LITHOLOGY: Unknown area, or far from known well, determine formation thickness and depth. 75%
WILDCAT WATER: Unknown area, or far from known well, determine presence of fresh water. 70%
FRESHWATER / SALTWATER: Differentiate between fresh and salt water reservoirs. 70%
WILDCAT OIL/GAS: Unknown area, or far from known well, determine presence of hydrocarbon. 47%
